Yes, there really is a Mt. Laguna Village.  It even has a post office.

Although there were campgrounds nearby, most participants stayed at Laguna Mountain Lodge, which also has a general store.  Shop early, because it closes at 5 PM.

Cabins like this one have one, two or three bedrooms.

The beautiful forests near Mt. Laguna are an ideal location for ARDF.

If you are interested in birds, mammals or flowers, you'll find something as you hunt transmitters at Mt. Laguna.

On the first day of the training camp, Jay Hennigan WB6RDV (at right) is in his USA orienteering suit and ready to set out.  He is pointing out something on the map to volunteer Woody Jackson, who was start timer for most of the events.

Bill Smathers KB6HXX leaves the starting line for the two-meter training event.

Chris Sanders KE6BRY is a newcomer who is still learning her equipment.  Notice the pink handle on her antenna, which was made by Julianne Walsh, KI6DYX.

Ruth Bromer WB4QZG has a long handle on her antenna so she can hold it high overhead for clear bearings.

Paul Voorhees W7PV has done transmitter hunting in the Pacific northwest, but this is his first time at the championships.

Jay Hennigan WB6RDV heads out onto the two-meter training course with his log-periodic antenna, carefully avoiding the fallen tree limbs.

Bob Cooley KF6VSE was the oldest competitor at this year's championships.  He has won many medals at previous USA Championships and will win more here.

The finish line for the training events was at Laguna Campground.  Dick Arnett WB4SUV is just finishing his 2m run.

The two-meter transmitters sent out keyed-carrier AM signals.  They were provided by the transmitter hunters of the Cincinnati area.  This is the finish transmitter, which transmits continuously to aid hunters in finding their way to the endpoint.

An important part of the training is review after each hunt.  Marvin Johnston KE6HTS (at left) is giving some pointers to Paul Voorhees W7PV.
