Czaba Tiszttarto sprained his ankle on the course and was attended to by Field Medic April Moell WA6OPS at the finish.

Some competitors marked their maps "on the fly" with bearings.

(L to R) Neil Robin WA6NBF, Jay Hennigan WB6RDV and Dale Hunt WB6BYU discussed their medal-winning routes after the two-meter hunt.

Ron Murdock W6KJ of Yuba City, California (at right) is the ARRL Section Manager for Sacramento Valley, which includes South Lake Tahoe. Not only did he come to the Championships and present awards on Saturday evening, but he volunteered to be a Course Marshall on the two-meter hunt. Here he gives a USA gold medal to Jen Harker W5JEN for the F21 category.

Nick Roethe DF1FO of Germany shows off his two-meter Visitor gold medal.

First-timer Pete Sias NØOY of Kansas took home a USA silver medal on two meters in the M50 category.

The were some special awards just for fun at the ceremony. Karla Leach KC7BLA (at left) presented a toy limousine to Barbara Johnston (wife of KE6HTS) because she had teasingly asked for a limo to get her to the two-meter starting area.

Brigitte Roethe, Vadim Afonkin and George Neal KF6YKN are ready for the 80-meter starting tone. They will win gold medals again on this band.

Emily DeYoung K4MLE carefully studies her map before the 80-meter start. Competitors receive their maps only ten minutes before they start. Emily will win another gold medal.

Bill Smathers KG6HXX of Santa Barbara waits at the 80-meter starting line.

Brian DeYoung K4BRI led this group in the starting corridor, followed by Harley Leach KI7XF and Nick Roethe DF1FO. All will win medals.

Jay Thompson W6JAY and Charles Scharlau NZØI in the corridor, each destined for a USA silver medal on this band.
