Thursday was a free day, when attendees could enjoy the attributes of Albuquerque, including the Atomic Museum, Natural History Museum, Aquarium, Botanical Gardens, and Zoo. Free shuttles to and from the UNM campus were provided by the city.

Volunteer Paul Engle AD5SX was in charge of the equipment impound area at the 80m start. He carefully set out and retrieved each unit.

Like many orienteers and radio-orienteers, Ken Harker WM5R wears gaiters to which protect his lower legs while running through the brush.

Starting group #1 Awaits the Olympic tones at the 80m starting line. Left to right are Brach Schwegman (M19) Jay Thompson W6JAY (M21), Bill Smathers KG6HXX (M50) and Jiri Suchy OK1WAY (M40). Behind them is Scott Stevenson KC5VVB, leader of the AARC starting point volunteer team.

The 80m start corridor went uphill! Hurrying away from the starting line are Bob Frey WA6EZV (M50) and Nadia Scharlau (D35). WA6EZV's map board is a recycled political campaign sign.

Jason Payne KC5HIM stops to plot a bearing out on the 80m course.
